Sports Shmorts

My father and my aunt are religiously tuning in to the Wimbledon Cup. Being another avid fan of tennis, my idol and the future ruler of the universe, Jessica Zafra, if I’m not mistaken from the posts in her blog, is currently in Wimbledon watching the whole competition live. My cousins and cousin-in-laws are hardcore basketball fans, one pair for the Celtics and the other for the Lakers, with a few disappointments for the one whose favorite team lost a couple of weeks ago(?). Most of my friends are passively watching the FIFA World Cup, every each one of them rooting for her preferred country and almost everyone cheering for the popular favorites and never for the underdogs.

This summer seems to be quite a sportsfest for almost everyone, and there’s a little something for everyone. And where am I in all this? I absolutely don’t care for sports, whether it is being watched or played, whether actively or passively. Everything I learned about sports and games in P.E. went in one ear and quickly worked its way out the other ear. All I know is Novak Djokovic is hot and Cristiano Ronaldo is not.

Ohh-la-la, Novak Djokovic โ™ฅ.

Here’s my reasoning. Sports involves either two teams trying to shoot, kick or throw the ball to the other team’s goal (soccer, football, basketball, hockey), two or more individuals trying to outrun or outmatch the other (car racing, horse racing), or a ball or a projectile going back and forth between two opposing individuals or teams until the ball hits the ground (volleyball, tennis, table tennis, badminton). Any differences may be in the variations in sports equipment and rules. Golf is another thing, but then again that’s quite a dull sport for mostly rich wealthy men who have none of the strength and vitality to play anything else, and baseball and cricket are just a little bit more complicated but it all boils down to the same thing. I know I’m oversimplifying the whole thing but that’s the way I see sports.

And all these sponsoring, commercial advertising, several sports players with the looks, pizazz, and the personality gaining celebrity status, and their managers trying to give specific players all the publicity they can get aren’t my kind of thing either. And just like with TV and film celebrities, the idiotic masses always feel the need to know everything and anything that happens to these celebrity players outside the court.

And I never understood those hardcore sports fans who do stuff like painting their faces up with all the colors of either the team’s logo or the country’s flag. And I just heard that they auctioned a sports player’s shirt, a hockey player’s if I’m not mistaken, for more than a million dollars. Um, I know the meaning of value is different for everyone but I just wish that whoever bought that hopefully dirty, unwashed, ragged, thing regrets buying the completely worthless thing. What’s the best you can do with that thing? Hang it like a poor animal’s head on your wall and boast about it to your friends? Pathetic. And they call geeky people like me freaks.

  1. after reading this, I don’t think I can say anything that would change your mind about sports. as you probably know by now, I’m into sports. I play ball twice a week and I enjoy it a lot. Why? Several different reasons.

sports is a confidence builder. especially when you’re good at what you do. sports also makes you want to be a competitor. it also gives you the chance to mingle and make more friends. I know what Im sayin may sound all weird/cheesy-for you but without sports – I won’t be half the man that I am now. Seryoso.

You have to play to understand what the whole fuss is about. Because when you start to play – then you start to appreciate the little things. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sorry, I suck at basketball. Whenever we played basketball in teams during P.E., my team players would just get pissed off at me for not being able to shoot a ball through a fucking hoop.
And I remember in elementary, since I was the only one who seemed to be bored about the whole thing, one time in P.E. class, I really just went around the court like a loner, with my classmates all seriously into the game and the others watching in the bench. Haha, everytime I remember that incident, it makes me feel embarrassed, haha.
This is how much I hate basketball! ๐Ÿ˜›

      • man, you can try other sports. if basketball ain’t your shit, then there’s billiards, badminton…try and try until you find the one for you.

  2. “And I never understood those hardcore sports fans who do stuff like painting their faces up with all the colors of either the teamโ€™s logo or the countryโ€™s flag.”

I think this somehow boosts their morale. You know how competition can be. ๐Ÿ™‚

And on the shirts auctioned, tsk, those’re all just unnecessary business strategies they use to suck people’s money with.

    • Ugh, I still find it a bit too much. Just buy a friggin’ logo or flag instead. A much more effortless and wiser thing to do :P.
The things people will do for money…. Capitalists… Hahaha :P.

      • haha you’re a marxist nga pala! My facebook religious view goes “Almost Marxist” haha

        convince me more chris! :p

  3. i bet you never joined your school’s sport fest back when you were in grade school or high school no? or maybe you were part of the cheering squad?

i was never into sports either. we were required to take 4 PE classes in college and I took Chess, Walking, Street Dance and Bowling. So hetero ๐Ÿ˜€

    • You’re so hetero :P.
I dunno, but my supposedly straight friends were actually the ones who joined the Booster squad/Pep squad, whatever, and are into the whole cheerleading thing while I on the other hand HATE it.
I have always hated the idea of women cheering for their men, always in a supportive and assisting role, and I find cheerleading pretty useless and stupid. No matter how much you shake your thang, it wouldn’t affect the results of the game, idiots. Boosting morale, my ass.

  4. I’m not into sports. Ayaw ko din ng hiking, climbing, fun run at kung ano pang mga nakakapagod na shit. Pero nanonood ako ng basketball, football, soccer, badminton, volleyball, tennis, etc, dahil.. err.. madaming lalake. Hahaha!

    • They should take their shirts off when they’re playing. Maybe then I might consider actually watching a whole sports match, hahaha. Otherwise, watching sports is mental torture for me :P.
I must admit though that I feel tingles and giggles coming whenever the soccer players do a emotional group hug after scoring a goal. Wahehehe.

  5. I like watching sports on TV, I don’t know why. Maybe because I was brought up as the bookish kid in the family and was not given a chance to protest, so I have always been a subconscious sports fan. LOL.

Novak isn’t the only hot guy on FIFA. Check these out:

    Roque Santa Cruz (Paraguay)

    Yoan Gourcuff (France)

    • Being a timid and geeky type, I’ve been forced to try watching and playing sports but to no avail at all. It’s just not my kind of thing. I wish I was brought up reading tons of books, instead of being raised as a philistine :P.
Novak Djokovic is actually a tennis player, hehehe. I just compared him to Cristiano Ronaldo because I don’t know why others seem to find the latter hot at all.
Omigosh, you seem to know how to tug my heartstrings. More hot exotic football players, please, haha. I’m drooling right now.

  6. I get why people are INTO sports. I just can’t spare that much enthusiasm myself. ๐Ÿ˜€ But I do enjoy sports, except basketball, because I suck. But the others, I like it, if only for the pure physicality of the acts. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I try to avoid any kind of purely physical activity as much as possible. ๐Ÿ˜›
Well, I go to the gym, not out of enjoyment, but so I can still maintain my current weight and shape, hehe.

  7. Sabi ko hindi na ko muna magcocomment sa mga posts mo, observe observe lang muna. Pero nakita ko ang picture ni Novak na kahapon lang eh ginugugel ko to da max, ayan masyado akong naexcite. Tsk.

    • Why? You don’t want to comment on my posts no more? Hmmpf!
Haha, adik :P. Did you go to Youtube and check out his imitations of other tennis players? He also knows how to jest and doesn’t seem to be like the stereotypical snobbish, elitist, uber-serious tennis player, hehe.
